Avoid nasty surprises at the airport! Nothing is more frustrating than having to abandon your well-earned holiday at the check-in desk because of missing entry documents or an expired passport. On this page, you can find a concise and up-to-date overview of everything important about the entry requirements, any visa obligation and the exact passport rules for Japan.
British citizens can generally enter Japan visa-free as a 'temporary visitor' and stay for up to 90 days. No visa is typically required in advance. Your passport should be valid for your entire stay, and it can help to be able to show proof of onward or return travel. Registering in advance through Visit Japan Web isn't mandatory, but it can significantly speed up entry and customs processing. There are no different rules for British citizens on short tourist stays compared with other visa-exempt nationalities.
A common reason for refused boarding: many countries strictly require that your passport remains valid well beyond your return date. Use this tool to work out in just a few seconds whether your current passport is still sufficient for your trip to Japan.

Preparing for travel abroad requires particular attention to border documents. The entry authorities of Japan strictly check at border crossings and airports whether all requirements are met. Airlines can face substantial penalties if they carry passengers without valid documents, which is why checks are carried out very carefully before departure.
The rule that a passport must remain valid (often for 3 to 6 months) beyond the date of your planned return confuses many holidaymakers. The reason is a safeguard used by the destination country: if illness, an accident or legal issues mean that you unexpectedly have to stay longer in Japan, the authorities can ensure that you still have a valid, internationally recognised travel document for your departure even weeks later.
If you plan to hire a car locally, you should not only keep an eye on your passport validity. Many car hire companies in Japan check very carefully at the desk whether the identity documents match the details on the driving licence. In many countries outside the EU, an International Driving Permit is also mandatory in addition to your national driving licence. You should also make sure that the credit card for the security deposit is issued in the name of the main driver, otherwise the hire car may be refused despite the booking.
For most intercontinental flights, a national ID card is not enough. You need a biometric electronic passport (ePassport) with an integrated chip. If you book at short notice and your passport has expired, you can apply for a fast-track passport or, in an emergency, a temporary passport. Please note: not every country accepts a temporary passport for entry or for applying for an electronic visa (e-visa). You should always check this in advance on the official embassy website.
Since 1 January 2024, older child passport arrangements are no longer sufficient for many journeys outside the EU and the Schengen Area. Babies and young children generally now need a standard biometric passport as well. As issuing times can currently take several weeks, families should check their documents for a Japan holiday very early.
That depends on whether Japan is in the EU or the Schengen Area. For most long-haul destinations outside Europe, a standard passport is mandatory. A national ID card is then not sufficient.
If the required validity period (for example, 6 months beyond the end of your trip) is not met, you will usually be refused boarding at the airport check-in desk. Airlines are required to check this strictly.
Yes. Since 2024, older child passport arrangements are no longer sufficient for many countries outside the EU. In most cases, minors need a standard biometric passport (ePassport) for smooth entry.
This depends heavily on the destination country. While some countries accept a temporary passport together with a specific visa, countries such as the USA (under ESTA) or Dubai often reject it outright. Ideally, apply for a fast-track passport.
Airline ground staff check your documents at the departure airport. If you cannot present a required visa (or your e-visa has not yet been approved), or if your passport does not meet the minimum validity of 0 months, boarding will be refused without exception.
Most non-EU countries that allow tourists to enter visa-free or with a visa on arrival require proof of planned departure at border control. You should always be able to show your booked return ticket or onward ticket at passport control in Japan (printed out or available offline on your phone).
For e-visas, always use only the official government websites of the destination country (often recognisable by endings such as .gov). The internet is full of dubious visa agencies that add a multiple of the actual fee as a "processing charge".
