British citizens travelling to Sri Lanka for tourism need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before departure. Visa-free entry is not available. The ETA should be applied for online well ahead of your trip and generally permits a stay of up to 30 days. Applying online in advance is the recommended and most reliable option, rather than relying on a visa on arrival. Before departure, also check current requirements for travel documents, return or onward tickets, and any recent changes to entry rules.

Preparing for travel abroad requires particular attention to border documents. The entry authorities of Sri Lanka strictly check at border crossings and airports whether all requirements are met. Airlines can face substantial penalties if they carry passengers without valid documents, which is why checks are carried out very carefully before departure.
The rule that a passport must remain valid (often for 3 to 6 months) beyond the date of your planned return confuses many holidaymakers. The reason is a safeguard used by the destination country: if illness, an accident or legal issues mean that you unexpectedly have to stay longer in Sri Lanka, the authorities can ensure that you still have a valid, internationally recognised travel document for your departure even weeks later.
If you plan to hire a car locally, you should not only keep an eye on your passport validity. Many car hire companies in Sri Lanka check very carefully at the desk whether the identity documents match the details on the driving licence. In many countries outside the EU, an International Driving Permit is also mandatory in addition to your national driving licence. You should also make sure that the credit card for the security deposit is issued in the name of the main driver, otherwise the hire car may be refused despite the booking.
For most intercontinental flights, a national ID card is not enough. You need a biometric electronic passport (ePassport) with an integrated chip. If you book at short notice and your passport has expired, you can apply for a fast-track passport or, in an emergency, a temporary passport. Please note: not every country accepts a temporary passport for entry or for applying for an electronic visa (e-visa). You should always check this in advance on the official embassy website.
Since 1 January 2024, older child passport arrangements are no longer sufficient for many journeys outside the EU and the Schengen Area. Babies and young children generally now need a standard biometric passport as well.
