Planning a trip to Fiji? Whether you are paying for your hotel, eating out or withdrawing cash from an ATM, the moment you use your everyday bank card outside the sterling area, your bank back home may quietly start charging you.

Warning: expensive conversion into Fijian Dollar (FJD)

In Fiji, you do not pay in pounds. Every time you use your normal bank card, your bank may charge a so-called foreign transaction fee (usually 1.75% to 2.00%).

On top of that, ATMs often charge a flat fee of £4.50 to £6.50 per withdrawal.

Many holidaymakers only notice this creeping drain on their money weeks later, when they check their bank statement at home and find dozens of small foreign currency charges.

These fees aren't set in stone.

Specialized travel cards were built specifically for this purpose: they eliminate foreign transaction fees worldwide and often waive ATM fees. For you as a traveler, that means: you pay exactly what's on the bill in Fiji – not a penny more.

Why Your Main Bank Is So Expensive in Fiji

Most current accounts in the UK are optimized for domestic use. As soon as you travel internationally, banks use foreign transactions as a lucrative revenue stream. There are two main cost traps you need to watch out for in Fiji:

1. The Foreign Transaction Fee

Since transactions in Fiji are made in Fijian Dollar (FJD), your bank has to convert every payment (whether at a grocery store, hotel, or rental car desk) into British Pounds. For this processing step, almost all traditional banks charge a percentage mark-up. Industry standards usually range from 2.75% to 3.00% (often 2.99% for major UK High Street banks). So if you spend the equivalent of £1,000 on holiday using your card, your bank automatically keeps up to £30 as a "non-sterling transaction fee".

2. Flat Fees & Cash Surcharges at ATMs

It gets even worse when you need cash from an ATM. If you use your regular debit card or standard credit card, your bank often charges a flat cash fee per transaction plus international withdrawal surcharges – regardless of how much cash you withdraw. These fees often range from £1.50 to £5.00 per withdrawal (or around 2%–3% of the amount withdrawn). If you make several small withdrawals on holiday ("just grabbing a quick ice cream at the beach"), you'll end up paying a fortune in extra charges.

Service in Fiji Traditional High Street Bank Dedicated Travel Card
Payment at a restaurant or hotel approx. 2.75% to 3.00% fee 0.00%
Withdrawing cash at an ATM approx. £1.50 to £5.00 per withdrawal £0.00
Annual card fee often £0 to £35 £0 forever

The ultimate tourist trap: DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion)

There is one trick you absolutely need to know in Fiji: when you pay by card or withdraw cash, the card terminal or ATM will often ask whether you want to be charged in the local currency (Fijian Dollar (FJD)) or in pounds sterling (GBP).

Always choose the local currency (Fijian Dollar (FJD))!
If you choose “in pounds”, the ATM operator or merchant in Fiji carries out the currency conversion (DCC). These rates are usually very poor and can include hidden mark-ups of up to 10%. If you are charged in Fijian Dollar (FJD), you leave the conversion to Visa or Mastercard at their fair, up-to-date wholesale exchange rates.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about paying in Fiji

Can I pay in Fiji with my debit card?

Cards on domestic-only networks may not work reliably outside Europe. Cards with a Maestro logo or newer Visa/Mastercard debit cards usually work technically. However, they do not protect you from your bank’s often very high foreign transaction and cash withdrawal charges.

Are there any charges that even a travel credit card cannot prevent?

Yes. Some ATM operators in Fiji add their own usage fee (surcharge), which is added directly to the withdrawal amount (for example: “This ATM charges a fee of ...”). This fee is charged by the ATM operator, not by your bank. Even travel credit cards often cannot refund this third-party charge. In that case, simply look for an ATM from a different bank.

Do I still need cash in Fiji?

Even though card payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless) are becoming more common worldwide, you should still carry some local cash (Fijian Dollar (FJD)) for tips, small street stalls, taxis or remote areas.
