Stranded at the station at night because your connection has gone? Your rail passenger rights with c2c in detail

Anyone who regularly travels with c2c on long-distance or regional services knows the problem: cancelled trains, signalling failures and missed connections cost time and patience. The good news: if your journey is seriously disrupted, rail passenger rights may protect you. In the UK, compensation is usually governed by the operator’s Delay Repay scheme and the National Rail Conditions of Travel, which set out when you may be entitled to money back.

c2c: How much compensation is available for delays?

A common misunderstanding is that it is not the delay to one individual train that matters most, but rather your arrival time at your booked destination. If your first train is only 10 minutes late but that causes you to miss the crucial onward connection and you ultimately arrive an hour later, your passenger rights may still apply in full under the relevant compensation scheme.

Delay at destination Your compensation (single ticket)
From 60 minutes (up to 119 mins) 25% of the fare paid
From 120 minutes (2 hours+) 50% of the fare paid

Important rule for return journeys: If you bought a ticket covering both the outward and return journey on one booking, the delay is usually assessed separately for the affected leg. The calculation basis may therefore be the relevant proportion of the total fare paid.

Exceptions: when c2c may not have to pay

Current passenger rights rules give rail operators more scope in certain situations. In so-called "extraordinary circumstances" that were unavoidable for the operator, entitlement to financial compensation may be excluded. These can include:

Good news: where the disruption is caused by the operator’s own staff strike, points failures, signalling equipment faults or defective trains, these exceptions do not automatically apply. In such cases, c2c may still have to reimburse you under Delay Repay or the National Rail Conditions of Travel.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about compensation from c2c

What about season tickets and travel passes?

Season tickets and travel passes are usually covered by separate compensation rules under the relevant Delay Repay scheme. Instead of using the full ticket price, operators often calculate compensation based on the daily or proportional value of the pass. The exact amount depends on the operator’s published terms and conditions.

What should I attach to my PDF claim?

Print the PDF document generated here, sign it by hand where required, and attach your ticket or proof of travel. If you have a paper ticket, include the original only if the operator requests it. For online tickets, simply print the e-ticket or attach the booking confirmation where accepted. Send the documents to the customer relations or compensation address used by c2c.

Can I simply take another train if there is a delay?

Often yes. Under the National Rail Conditions of Travel, if your train is cancelled or delayed and you cannot complete your journey as planned, you may usually travel on the next available service or by a reasonable alternative route. Important: whether you can use a different operator or a more expensive service depends on the circumstances and the operator’s policy.

Important notes on reimbursements from c2c

c2c operates a compact but heavily used commuter network between London Fenchurch Street and South Essex, including Southend and Shoeburyness. Delay and cancellation claims are handled under the National Rail Conditions of Travel and c2c's Delay Repay scheme rather than EU rail regulation, with compensation typically starting at 15 minutes' delay. c2c's registered office and Customer Relations team is based in London. Passengers who aren't satisfied with the response to a complaint can escalate it free of charge to the independent Rail Ombudsman.
